I remember when I first travelled to Europe for my company to teach a course in the UK, one night a bunch of the students and I went out for dinner at a Pie place. Every 20 or so minutes a lady would walk through the place and announce what flavor pies were ready and you could get one or wait for the next batch. At first thought, the UK loves pies, so it would be safe to assume Australia would love pies as well. But I think the world loves pies and I just don’t happen to know the term for pie for most of the world. When you think about it, dim sum is a pie, a eggroll is a pie, a hot pocket is a pie, and on and on and on. Some type of meat or fish, wrapped in some type of dough and cooked.
In Sydney, there is a famous pie stand called Harry’s Cafe de Wheels or Harry’s Pies & Peas located in Woolloomooloo. Their pie of fame is the Dragon. It is a baked bread bowl with meat in the bottom, then a layer above the rim of mashed potatoes and then topped with a layer of green, pea paste. Older patrons and traditionalists will go for this. There are variations on the classic such as the mandatory curry pie, etc. Of course the younger generation seems to drift towards the hotdogs and chilidogs. I saw a couple of cab drivers eating there and that usually means two things, inexpensive and fairly good.
