Lisa and I took in Elegy the movie based on Philip Roth’s book Dying Animal on Saturday. It was only playing at a few theatres down here so we ended up at the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace in Cremorne. As an aside, the best way to find out what is playing where on the Internet appears to be this website: http://www.yourmovies.com.au/. It has been hard to find the US equivalent web sites down here, so I thought I would share this with you and other sites as I locate them.
The Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace is a palace. We were in theatre 4 and it had a traditional stage in front. While waiting for the movie to start, the floor opened up and a organist was slowly raised and played. Bad phone picture:
Elegy was an okay movie. It felt like the screen writer and/or director was challenged a bit and the ending felt like it was a little gift wrapped. I told Lisa that Penélope Cruz’s comfort with being naked without being in a love scene was something American actresses seldom can do and she agreed.
Why I Hate Buff Old Men
Okay, in The Wrestler, Mickey Rourke, comes out after years of self abuse from booze and boxing and looks like Adonis. I can understand that he has always worked out and really put the hours in the gym to create his body for this role. But I am still jealous.
In Elegy, Ben Kingsley is frickin’ buff. Gandhi is older than me and can kick my butt with one hand tired behind his back. This is just too much. What is a middle aged computer jockey suppose to do!!! <smile>. I can watch a movie with Jason Statham or even Jean-Claude Van Damme kicking butt and tell myself that if I was a bit younger I could be doing those things, but how am I suppose to lie to myself when Gandhi is ripped!?!
