I’m not very hip and don’t really understand things like Van Dutch or Diesel clothe lines made up of denim and cotton. Nor do I understand why someone would want to pay $200 on a cotton t-shirt that has a print on it of a tattoo on it.
But I do now know, after getting through my Royal Yachting Association Diesel engine course that there are three main systems that allow such an engine to run. There is the air intact and exhaust system, the cooling system, and the fuel system. The later is about where 80% of the problems that affect marine diesel engines occurs. I guess you could also say there is a fourth which is the electrical system. In class we had a little Volvo engine to examine, tear down the systems and put them back together, but we didn’t really get to make it run.
In the afternoon, we went out to a yacht, a big yacht of about 51 feet, and examined how these three systems (plus electric) work. It is amazing how these engines can be squeezed into such a small space and tracing the different systems was very educational. Real world almost always trumps classroom, almost.
