Yes, we are in West Texas and the sign outside the restaurant says ‘ We Don’t dial 911’…
After visiting Judge Roy Bean’s saloon & home, the guide there recommended that we stop in Sanderson, Tx for some BBQ and much needed gasoline. See, we’ve run out of gas in west TX in this same area before. We were driving my old Saturn convertible from TX to San Diego to be shipped to Hawaii. By sure luck or NOLA voodoo, some Professor from Sol Ross University stopped when she saw us hitch-hiking and brought us to the nearest gas station and then drove us 15 minutes back to our vehicle…yes there are Angels in this world. So here we find the Traveler Blues mobile trying to make it 60 miles on less than a quarter of a tank in its belly on hilly West Texas 90. At 14 miles to the gallon in these conditions, its going to be close. Whew, we made it. Special note, there aint no gas between Del Rio and Sanderson, Tx.
The interesting thing about this restaurant is that all of their waitresses are packing…and the food is damn good too. An American Diner… with hand guns… IF that weren’t enough, at the Ranch House restaurant, you can also get your make-up done by a cosmetologist and buy your cosmetics. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ranch-House-Restaurantsanderson-Tx/569427596534768
Back to Judge Roy Bean…if you find yourself between the two previously mentioned cities with working gas stations and you have a hanker to learn a bit of history and aren’t being a slave to time, stop by the Judge Roy Bean Museum in Langtry, Texas. Most everything you know about this person of flexible law and order is what you saw in the Paul Newman movie that came out in 1972. Here you can see his courthouse bar, some of his prized items and learn about this colorful man. Also the Ranger/Guide, from Austin, Texas, was super helpful.
We are headed to Big Bend where they had 5″ of snow on Thursday. The Rangers tell us that they have not had snow in over two years so this could be interesting…we also don’t have reservations for any of the campsites… c’est la vie !
