It is time to leave sunny Florida for a few days and head to Austin so Lisa can attend her Yoga Therapy weekend training. It was way too easy to drop the campervan off at Ft. Lauderdale airport offsite parking location and hop on a plane. It was interesting that one of the national airport parking chains wanted to charge us for two parking spots even though we told them that our camper only requires one. Needless to say, we went with an independent and paid about $12 a day.
You might think that after all of our struggles to find an available campsite, we might have worked out a few details & reservations before flying back to Florida. (Did I mention that we are competing with professional RV’ers who book their sites 11 months in advance? ) WTH, we decided to just go with the flow. Besides, having limited availability at sites would allow us to experience a wide variety of beaches, campgrounds 🙂
Our first night back in Florida we stayed in a suburban county campground near the airport, Markam County Park in Broward County.
This was a lovely suburban park but the campground backed up against an all night shooting range! (Okay, only on certain nights do they allow shooting until 10pm. Of course we were there for one of those nights.) It is about 25 minutes south of where the recent HS shootings occurred…The next day we drove down to Miami to visit an old friend I met in Hawaii. It was great to catch up with Evelyn and see how her beautiful children have grown. I’ve missed you Evelyn and all of the fun times we had on the back porch, in the kitchen, at the studio, on the beach, and dealing with Franco, the landlord!
Traveling north along Florida’s Atlantic coast, we stopped at Juno Beach at dusk to check out the fishing pier.
Our quest for an available campsite continued while we had dinner in West Palm Beach and watched the sunset. We finally settled on our first ‘Wallydocking’ in Palm Beach. Walmart boondocking is highly frowned upon in Florida- although most other states do allow this. Luckily we were not the only campers in the back of this Walmart and although it was our first time, we seemed to sleep just fine. Then we were ready to head up the east coast and hit as many beaches as Douglas could handle!
