It is still cold and dreary in Paris so we got a late start taking the metro to The Pompidou. Stopped to pick up foie gras in cans at a small market in this square close to the Pompidou. Soon we will be in the Perigord which is foie gras heaven! There are several levels in quality of foie gras that range from leftover bits and pieces of the duck or goose being used all the way to just the ‘engorged’ liver only. The giant soccer/football is a gentle reminder to all whom pass that the Euro 2016 championship is being hosted in France starting on June 10th.
This museum of modern art caused a scandal when it opened in 1977 and was my favorite museum when I first visited Paris in 1980. The guts of the building are on the outside and color coded: water pipes are green, air ducts are blue, electrical is yellow and elevators and escalators are red.
We seemed to be attracted to lots of large white pieces of art: Jean Arp, Niki de Saint Phalle, Marcel Wanders, Christodoulous Panayiotou – that heap is a pile of shredded Cyprus money- a statement of the value of Cypriot pounds that disappeared with the introduction of the Euro in 2008.
My favorite church in the background- Sacre-Couer Basilica
Interesting chair
My favorite piece in the Pompidou was the special Exposition of Gérard Fromanger- This massive canvas was painted in 1991 after the First Gulf War. Images of war are mixed in with monuments, landscapes and references to painting as well as the painter at work. Douglas between more Fromanger works.
Ended a very long day at Chez Toinette, just a few blocks from our hotel, https://www.facebook.com/CHEZ-TOINETTE-156422304432184/ with a delicious foie gras appetizer and filet for Lisa & duck for Douglas. This restaurant is small, so you will want to have made reservations in advance. We saw several couples told to wait in the street or just turned away. Voila!
